Read Biography

Dr. Sharlene Dzugan joined the faculty of University of the Cumberlands in 1990. She holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Wheaton College and a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from Florida State University. Dr. Dzugan has been a faculty participant in the National Science Foundation Summer Program in Solid State Chemistry and has collaborated on research projects with others in her field.

Read Biography

Dr. T.P. Dzugan’s area of specialization is Physical Chemistry, in which field he holds both an M.S. and a Ph.D. from Florida State University. Since joining the faculty of University of the Cumberlands in 1989, Dr. Dzugan has devoted himself to directing student research and, since 1991, he has collaborated on seven such projects. He has further demonstrated his commitment to student success by being a faculty leader of INSIGHTS, Cumberland College’s semester-long freshman orientation program.

Read Biography

Mr. Jeffrey Schwarz joined the faculty of the University of the Cumberlands in 2004. He holds a B.S. from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and is currently pursuing his doctorate at the University of Kentucky. His area of specialty is Analytical and Instrumental Chemistry. Mr. Schwarz is a member of the American Chemical Society (Analytical Chemistry and Chemical Education Divisions). He is also a STRIPE in the University’s freshman orientation program, INSIGHTS.

Read Biography

Dr. Julie Tan first came to University of the Cumberlands from Selangor, Malaysia as a student, completing a B.S. in Chemistry in 1987. Upon her graduation from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville with a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Dr. Tan returned to Cumberlands as a member of the faculty. In 1998, she was named Honored Professor by Cumberland’s Student Government Association.

Dr. Tan, a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) Division of Organic Chemistry and Chemical Education, serves as faculty director of the department’s Alchemist Club. Since 1991, she has directed several senior research projects, has collaborated with numerous professional colleagues on studies published in The Journal of Organic Chemistry and The Tetrahedron Letters, and has presented research at regional and national meetings of the American Chemical Society.
